The need for reaching different audiences is growing in the whole world, and so is the production of audiovisual content. What is the biggest difference between dubbing and voice-over?

Dubbing creates an illusion that every person that is visible on the screen is speaking in the target language. It is suitable for translating different kinds of entertainment materials, such as movies, series and videos. Every character that appears on the screen is given a voice. Dubbing is recorded by professional voice actors. When translating, the selection of words is very important as the voice should be synchronized with the movement of the lips of the actors on the screen. Well-made dubbing requires a lip-synced translation, proper audio equipment and high-quality editing. It is good to use dubbing when every nuance is important – not only words, but also tonality, accents, dialects etc. The information contained within dubbing is identical to the original content in order to convey the message as accurately as possible. Dubbing is the best choice when the entertainment material conveys a large amount of information and the content should sound and seem familiar to the viewer.

Voice-over is different because it is usually narrative, less synchronized than dubbing, and does not convey the tonality of the content. Usually it has been recorded on top of the original audio and it is spoken by a person who cannot be seen on the screen. Voice-over can also be an added sound. Voice-over is a method of translation which conveys less emotions and nuance. It is best suited for smaller content, for example conferences or meetings where voice-over is rather used to record the translation. However, voice-over is also an important tool for every filmmaker. It makes it possible to convey the story effectively. Media companies use voice-over also in television programs.
